The main game also receives an extreme survivor difficulty that removes all checkpoints from the campaign, along with plenty of new outfits and ‘classic’ skins, which replace Lara with her Tomb Raider 2, 3, or Angel of Darkness models. They may have had to wait a year, but they are receiving the best edition of one of last year’s best games (you can read Nick’s original review here), as well as all of its DLC, including the fantastically trippy ‘Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch’ and the borderline-survival-horror of ‘Cold Darkness Awakened’.

However, seeing the game as a whole, with its antagonist and story, added gameplay elements I didn't like, I still prefer TR2013 over it.It is safe to say that PS4 owners have been the ‘winners’ in the whole Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity debacle. The atmosphere was brilliant, though, so it was in the Croft Mansion DLC. The flashback sequences to her mansion were actually a nice idea but with knowing it's all about Trinity it wasn't even half as suspensful as the makers probably tried it to be. So ultimately I do like Rise of the Tomb Raider because it felt the same like TR2013 in many regards, with added gameplay-elements I didn't like and ultimately skipped, and worse storytelling. And there's some puzzle solving, not too much that you get stuck in a clearly story and action-focused game with a respective pace. There's platforming and climbing, there are intense action sequences that require timed actions such a jumps or well-placed shots. The combat offers options of stealth, crafting bombs and molotov cocktails on the fly, a small variety of guns (close range, distance, high capacity arms, side arm) and offers decent hit feedback and weapons and character responsiveness (apart from the input delay introduced in Rise). It doesn't feel too rewarding because even on the hardest difficulty you don't really need much the things you can find to there could be improvement.

There's exploration with rewards in crafting materials, weapons and upgrade materials for weapons, and skill points. Gameplay-wise, both aren't perfect but well-done. I also stopped caring and reading the lore pieces pretty soon. They tried to spice things up with including Anna's sickness to provide a more personal and believable, or human, reason to search for the source and of course it builds up to dramatic end, which isn't quite as dramatic as it could have been if Anna was more present in the actual gameplay or if the interaction was more frequent with Lara and if we hadn't seen her mostly accompanying the bad guy. And I think it's just so much better than what Rise is trying to do. So we have the island and the curse, Matthias and his cult, and Lara and his friends – three forces constantly acting upon each other and causing the conflict of the story. Then her friend gets captured and she decides to rescue her (which also contradicts Matthias goal because he and his cult want to use her for ritual). It's a personal thing but I always find these kind of plots too one-dimensional and I prefer diverging goals between protagonist and antagonist, like in the first one, where Lara tries to actually escape from the island, from the cult (whereas the Island itself won't allow it, and it didn't allow the cult members, either). you know from the start who is the bad guy, that they want the same as Lara, or in other words, Lara want the same to prevent them from using the source they're all seeking. They shoved in more open world activities which some people may think is good and some may think otherwise, like me. The animations, though, were still so "floaty" like before. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, the only thing that was objectively better was the visuals and they were indeed great.

I've read and listened to every single lore piece in that game, finished it twice on 100%, on PC, and later on on PS4 (because the PC version never got the visual PS4 Upgrades).

You didn't know, especially right after the ship crash, hanging in that cave or that madman, if there were just crazy people on the island, if there was some kind of order or society to it, that you only discovered later on.

You were exploring the island and the cult on said island and incrementally unraveled what had happened before through audio logs, artifacts scattered around the world and over the course of the story with its cutscenes and characters. I think the storytelling was better in the first one because nothing was really clear.
